About this recipe

Feijoada is considered the national dish of Brazil, but its roots reveal a history more complex and deeply linked to African heritage in the Americas.

Born in the 17th century during the Portuguese colonial period, its evolution is closely linked to the improvised kitchens of African slaves who adapted leftover pork meat to their ancestral culinary knowledge.

Over time, this preparation went from being a symbol of subsistence to becoming an emblem of Brazilian mestizo identity, embraced by all social classes.

In Rio de Janeiro, it became popular as a Saturday meal, accompanied by samba and family gatherings, and since the mid-20th century, it has been promoted as a symbol of national unity in official speeches and civic celebrations.

Its presence today in haute cuisine restaurants and popular festivals makes it a true bridge between history, memory, and celebration.
